This remarkable recognition is not just a testament to its superior quality but also highlights the craftsmanship of one of Scotland’s few independently owned distilleries.

Unveiling the champion: The GlenAllachie 12

The World Whiskies Awards, a prestigious competition that annually celebrates the finest in whisky production globally, announced its winners in late March 2025. The GlenAllachie 12 not only topped the Single Malt category but also clinched the title of Best Scotch Speyside Single Malt. This is the second accolade for The GlenAllachie in this competition, following a victory in 2021 with its 10-year-old Cask Strength Batch 4.

The victory is even more noteworthy as it had to surpass formidable opponents across various subcategories, including American, Irish, and Japanese single malts, as well as other Scotch whiskies from regions like Islay and the Highlands.

From distillery to distinction

Interestingly, The GlenAllachie Distillery, located in the heart of Speyside, has a relatively short history of branded releases. Established in 1967, it primarily focused on producing whisky components for blends for its first 50 years. The distillery’s fortunes took a dramatic turn in 2017, when it was acquired by an investment group led by whisky veteran Billy Walker. Under his guidance, The GlenAllachie introduced its core range of single malts in 2018, rapidly gaining recognition for their quality and complexity.

“With these four different cask types, we aim to balance a myriad of flavors to craft our unique product,” explained Ronan Currie, assistant blender at The GlenAllachie. The whisky matures in a combination of Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks, red wine, and American virgin oak, contributing to its rich and diverse flavor profile.

“They said it was just a pie” then I uncovered something that defies all expectations
